Road Trip - Summer 2015: Welcome to Yellowstone

On Wednesday, July 8, we arrived at the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park! So exciting!

We hadn't been in the park very long before we were greeted by the official welcoming committee: the bison.

There was a backup of at least 100 cars behind this buffalo. His face says, "Yeah? What are you gonna do about it?" Because it was our first hour in the park, we didn't realize this was the most exciting buffalo encounter we would have. Oh, we saw lots more buffalo, but this one was pretty funny, walking down the middle of the road like that. Watching the buffalo, I grunted in my best buffalo voice and said, "The.new.speed.limit.is...two...miles...per...hour." The kids thought that was hilarious and quoted it throughout the trip.

The day went rather downhill from there. From the West Entrance to our campground at Grant Village was about 50 miles. We checked in at the camper services office and noted the price of firewood was $8 a box. The box came with 4 pieces of wood. Yikes!

We found our campsite and to say we were disappointed is an understatement.

Apparently, the gal who took our reservation by phone misunderstood what equipment we were coming with, or didn't put it in the computer correctly or something. Notice the sign says "No Camping"? That's because they put us in a site not suitable for tents. And there wasn't enough room to park both the trailer and the car. We had to pick one and move the other to a parking lot across the way. But that is not all...

This is the view from the street. That's the kids' tent, right between the garbage and the recycling. This was the only place to dispose of recycling in the entire campground. And although there were dozens of dumpsters throughout the campground, many campers stopped right here to dispose of their trash on their way out, because it was convenient to the road. So all evening and all morning, people stopped their cars in front of the tent and banged open the metal can to dump their waste. Super annoying.

Here is a view from inside the site looking toward the road. Ours was one of the only sites between the road and the restrooms. So we had quite a few people cut through our site to reach the restrooms. Because there was a patch of grass behind the tent, several people took their dogs there to do their business. It was pretty much the worst place in the campground. In the following week, we tried to find a worse site and failed. We had The Worst Campsite at Grant Village.

Ben was livid. I was near tears. There was no way we were going to spend a week here! Ben went back to camper services and gave them an earful. They sent a representative to inspect our site. They agreed with us and apologized. They promised to move us first thing in the morning and gave us a free box of firewood. Although the situation was frustrating, we were able to laugh about it once we knew it was going to change.

All pictures by me.
