Road Trip - Summer 2015: Geyser Day

Friday, July 10, was the day we went to Old Faithful and the other geysers. Old Faithful erupts roughly every 90 minutes. We arrived about an hour early, so we walked around the gift shop and then sat and waited.

This is Cody waiting for the eruption. It is notable that every seat was packed full of people, many were standing behind the benches, and still more were sitting on the floor in front of the benches. Yet, here is Cody with room for two people to sit next to him. I think his moody demeanor granted him some extra privacy.

The kids were less than impressed with Old Faithful. This photo was taken during the eruption. Autumn insists that the look on her face is deceiving--that the smell of sulfur and the mist from the spray was causing this expression--and she actually thought it was pretty cool. However, everyone else said it was just okay.

We took a walk up a hill to Solitary Geyser. Cody said this one was his favorite. It had a very small gurgle, but you only had to wait about 5 minutes to see it. From there, you could continue up the hill to Observation Point. I was winded just climbing to Solitary Geyser, so I opted to go back down hill. Cody, Michayla, and Shea came with me. Ben, Autumn, and Sean climbed farther up and apparently we missed quite a view. Both Autumn and Sean said seeing Old Faithful erupt from the top of Observation Point was their favorite part of the day.

Meanwhile, Shea was begging to go to back to the gift shop because he'd found what he wanted to spend his souvenir money on: a stuffed buffalo! He could hardly stay in his skin he was so anxious to buy it, and Cody had had enough of walking around looking at stinky holes in the ground with hundreds of complete strangers, so I excused them both to return to the car by way of the gift shop.

Michayla and I continued walking the boardwalks observing various geysers. We kept expecting Ben and company to catch up with us, but they never did. Apparently Observation Point was quite the hike!

My favorite was Castle Geyser.

We ate sandwiches in the Old Faithful parking lot, then we moved along north to Virginia Cascade. That was really pretty!

Shea with his beloved buffalo. He was rarely seen without it after this day, although it still doesn't have a name as far as I know.

Cody pries himself away from his Gameboy to get some fresh air.

I'm terrible at selfies, and I don't especially like the way I look in this one, but I think it's hilarious that we were photobombed by Michayla and Shea's buffalo!

On our drive, we also saw several animals. This was the only moose we saw at Yellowstone. Photo by Ben.

This was not the only elk we saw. Photo by Ben. We saw about as many elk as we saw bison (which is a lot). In fact, whenever we saw cars pulled over to the shoulder of the road, we would try to guess what had captured the attention: elk or buffalo? It was rarely anything else.

Here is one of many, many buffalo we saw. There were also enumerable Canada geese. Photo by Ben.

After our day of driving, we did laundry in the camp laundromat and visited some of the shops at Grant Village. A good day.

Fitbit step count on July 10: 16,553 steps (a personal record!)
